Man Utd may have released one of Europe’s best upcoming superstars.

While much has been said this transfer window about the lack of incoming activity with regard to the Red Devils, there has always been a recurring defense of the club on one aspect. That has to do with how they have been recruiting some of Europe’s best players to their youth academy.

These talents are in addition to the already incredible local pool of players who dream of making the ascent to the senior team.

However, for every Marcus Rashford or Mason Greenwood, there are youngsters who simply don’t make the cut and often seen the path of being loaned out and eventually released.

One such player is Angel Gomes, who was once a much-anticipated prospect in the youth ranks and renowned for his skillset.

Gomes scripted United history when he became the youngest player to feature for the senior squad in 2017, the first footballer born in the 2000s to make his professional debut in the Premier League.

However, that was about the extent of his impact with the club as the years since saw him get too few chances. In July of 2020, the Englishman opted to not renew his terms with the English giants and was lapped up by Ligue 1 side Lille. He is currently playing on loan with Portuguese outfit Boavista.

Lille’s Director of Football Luis Campos didn’t mince words about the 20-year-old’s potential, stating to O Jogo: “He is a player that I had to watch several times live, both in the Manchester United teams and in the youth teams. For me, I repeat, he is one of the greatest European talents of today.”

Campos was justifying the need to send Gomes out on loan to develop his skillset. Sure enough, there may be a scenario in the future wherein United see the error of their ways and seek to acquire him, perhaps for a sizable sum.
