Our U23s started their 20/21 season with an impressive 6-0 win when they faced Salford City’s first team in the EFL Trophy. However, United looked far less superior when they faced Leicester City’s U23s in their first PL2 Div 1 match.
Preview
In our two competitive U23’s matches that we played so far this season, we’ve fielded a very young team. And it's no different tonight. With James Garner's move to Watford, this now leaves Northern Irish midfielder - Ethan Galbraith - as the only midfielder who started regularly for the U23’s last season.
United currently have some important players on the side-lines, which includes highly-rated right back Ethan Laird; and D’Mani Mellor who could have been leading the line for our U23’s this season if it wasn’t for a horrible ACL injury. The injury will probably rule him out not only of the whole season, but also out of his contract which expires in a year.
Another English full-back in Reece Devine is also missing due to injury, while Teden Mengi’s involvement with the first team now rules him out of most of the academy games. His figure at the back will surely be missed within our U23’s set-up!
Liverpool’s U23s finished last season in 5th place. They have started this season with a tight 1-0 win over their Merseyside rivals Everton.
However, they then went out to lose 2-1 to Derby County. I’m expecting a very similar game to the Leicester City one, where United ended up on the wrong side of a 2-0 scoreline - It could’ve been a very different one if we took our chances in the first half especially.
Interestingly, ex-United legend Dwight Yorke will attend tonight’s match after he’s been recently working with our U23’s. It’s certainly a good thing to have high calibre ex-players linking up with the likes of Nicky Butt and Neil Wood to give our youngsters some advice. Last season, we also saw Patrice Evra working with our academy players.
Well, kick-off isn’t far away now! The match is starting at 19:00 BST and will be shown live on MUTV, with live coverage starting 15 minutes before kick off. Good luck to all our youngsters featuring in tonight’s game! Hope we can get our first points in the PL2 Div 1 off our rivals!
